We thought she was getting better but she wasn't. I called a friend and told her that she wasn't able to keep any food in her stomach so she ordered some Zofran to help with her stomach. But the afternoon came and we noticed Megan had taken a really bad turn.
Her symptoms were:
- lethargic
- cold hands and feet
- no appetite
- no fever
- heavy breathing
- needed assistance getting up
- throwing up
- slow speech
- weight loss
Our friend that is a nurse came over and did some testing. Megan's signs led her to the word "diabetes". When we heard that word we were in shock. No! This can't be true. Like how is this happening?! We immediately called 911 because that was going to be the fastest way to get her into the hospital and seen. The paramedics arrived and ran her blood sugar. Their machine went to 500 and her sugar levels were above that. By the time she got to the hospital her sugar level was at 825.
Megan was in a DKA which is known as a diabetic ketoacidosis. DKA is a complication of diabetes that results from increased levels of a chemical called ketones in the blood. It causes excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue and vomiting. This can be very dangerous and deadly. We knew Megan was in the right place at Cooks Children Hospital in Fort Worth.
The did a CT scan to make sure there was no swelling on her brain. The test came back clear.
It was the very hardest thing to see your child suffering and there was nothing you could do. She had so much fluid being pumped in her that they were worried she was going to pee everything. We had to put a diaper on her and she hated it. Pulled at it over and over.
They put Megan in an ICU room so they could get her stable and get some rest. They came in every hour to check her blood so she didn't get much sleep.
If you look closely at this picture you can see the red around her eyes. This shows how much her face to starting to fill back in.
Jason told me to go home because he was going to stay with her over night and then I could come to stay during the day. We decided that if we both stayed we would both be tired the next day.
